Chair B

Chair B is a transforming lounge chair developed through an iterative process of prototyping, ergonomic testing, and material experimentation. Inspired by Soviet-era industrial design and the spatial realities of compact living, the project explores how a single piece of furniture can shift between upright working and relaxed lounging positions through a simple, utilitarian mechanism. Rather than directly replicating Soviet aesthetics, Chair B references them subtly through proportion, multifunctionality, and manufacturing logic. Powder-coated tubular steel, exposed mechanical elements, and a restrained material palette reflect this influence while maintaining a contemporary identity. The result is a chair that functions equally as an occasional chair and workspace seating, reducing the need for multiple furniture pieces within smaller interiors. A major focus throughout the project was ensuring the chair remained visually compelling regardless of historical context. Extensive physical testing informed decisions surrounding comfort, movement ergonomics, upholstery construction, and durability, resulting in a piece that balances industrial character with refined detailing and everyday usability.
